Approximately January 11th 2006 AO-7 experienced something new - the orbit precessed to the point where it was no longer going into eclipse. This phenomena continues for several weeks in 2006, and the duration of non-eclipse will increase each winter over time. The following are some charts that demonstrate precession.
|
This first chart shows the duration of AO-7's eclipses. Over time the duration has been dropping as the satellite has
moved closer to the grey line. In January 2006 it finally progressed to the point where it didn't enter into
eclipse. As can be seen in 2007 and 2008, this period increases over time.

This chart shows the latitude where AO-7 goes into and comes out of eclipse. Again the time where it
doesn't enter eclipse is visible.
